The Face of Faces of Courage
Peggie Sherry lived in Tampa a majority of her life, but recently moved to Pinellas with her two children, Chris and Isabella, and two Morkies. She loves reading, antiquing, sports and drives a red BMW K1200RS Motorcycle. Peggie is a two-time breast cancer survivor and she also survived a serious motorcycle accident that left her shoulder and arm rebuilt with Titanium; you just can't keep her down! A week after completing a year of rehab for her arm, she took an 1,800 mile motorcycle ride around the state of Florida as a breast cancer outreach. She also had the great privilege to ride the final leg of the Lance Armstrong Tour of Hope into Washington, DC.
In 2001 she was offered a job as Tampa Regional Director of a cancer camp headquartered in Upstate New York. Two years later she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Six months later she had a reoccurrence. The founder of that camp decided that Peggie was unable to run the program while undergoing treatment and closed the office in December 2003. Unwilling to leave her campers, Peggie took $110,000 of her inheritance and started Faces of Courage in January 2004.
Peggie says the name and meaning of the organization are synonymous. “The name is exactly what we see everyday when dealing with grown ups and children battling this horrid disease. You just cannot image what they face…not only their possible death, devastating treatments and side effects, most often financial ruin and public shunning. We provide a sanctuary where then can just be normal and no one minds them being bald or ill or afraid. We all understand because most of us have been there, and done that. We have been to hell, slapped the devil on the face and are here to talk about it.”
